June apples; bad day…

Still eating last years apples. Amazing. They are pretty withered and a bit pock-marked, so they need trimming up before eating, but they taste fine. I’ve never known apples last like this before. We’re down to our last bucketful now.

Had a bad a day yesterday. A couple of frustrating and continuing internet problems to start with, so nothing new there. Then found that  a talk I was going to on Forensic Science had been cancelled and been replaced by one on Benefits for the Aged. Very worthy indeed, but something Anne is already an expert on, and not rivetingly interesting to my philosophically-inclined mind. So most of my morning was ‘unproductive’, let’s say.

Then the car started making that strange noise again. It sort of squawks when you take your foot off the gas, and again, but less so when you touch the gas again. But now it is squawking even when the engine is turned off. I don’t like this.

Then I paid a £500+ bill for having our mains waterpipe replaced after a neighbour, under whose land the pipe runs, had accidentally ripped it out with a digger. Not our fault! But the pipe had been a source of trouble for the last 25 years, so we were resigned to having to pay for a replacement.

Nothing very positive so far. Then…

We’ve had drippy weather for the last week or so and the ‘lawn’ has got far too long, but has remained too wet for normal cutting. ‘The hell with it’, I thought. ‘I’m going for it anyway. I need something positive to take from the day!’

You’ve guessed… about ten minutes ino the job the machine made a bit of a clanking noise. Not a loose blade. Then I noticed that it seemed to be cutting but not collecting. Then I noticed that oil was blowing back through the filler tube. Oh gawd….

I lost it, a bit. Came in virtually howling. Thumped a door. Flounced quite a lot. Anne was more amused than helpful and suggested a whiskey. Best I’d got. Confidence wrecked….

More than one whiskey, I must admit, and true to form, it woke me up at 2am with my heart thumping and no possibility of sleep for at least an hour. That’ll teach me.

I look to today to be little more civil. What chance? Internet problems still ongoing but with any luck Alun, my mechanic genius/friend might be able to tell me what’s wrong with the car. Mower beyond it, I’m afraid.

I feel a bit ridiculous after yesterday’s tantrum and put it down mainly to exhaustion and long-standing frustration with getting my books ‘out there’. Whatever, I regard losing one’s temper as a failure. Ah well… the success will be to bounce back. Task for the day!
